What is an abortion?

Abortion is the surgical or medical termination (end) of pregnancy. Dr. Hodes and Dr. Nauser two similar surgical procedures for termination of pregnancy in our office.
First trimester of pregnancy:

A woman is in the first trimester of pregnancy, when less than 13-14 weeks have passed since their last menstrual period. First trimester abortion is called "vacuum aspiration or suction curettage (D & C"). This extremely safe procedure is the most frequently, which in our office. First, the cervix is numbed with a local anesthetic. The doctor gradually expanded (extended) of the cervix by inserting narrow, tapered rods. A small tube (cannula) is inserted into the uterus, and tubes to a suction machine. The uterine contents are suctioned through the tube. Finally, the doctor carefully examined the walls of the uterus to ensure that no tissue remains. The whole procedure takes only a minute or so. Women have symptoms such as menstrual cycle cramps during the procedure, and sometimes for an hour or so later.

Second Trimester Pregnancy:

Less than 5% of abortions in the United States are between 15-22 weeks of pregnancy. Most of them are associated with dilation and evacuation (D & E "), which is the procedure used in our office.

The D & E procedure requires much skill on the part of surgeons, and is an extension of the suction method just described. To this, the doctor uses suction as in the first quarter, but also need tweezers to remove tissue too large to move through the suction hose. The cervix must be dilated wider than in the vacuum aspiration, it is often necessary, the drug misoprostol or Laminaria expand the cervix. Laminaria sticks are made up of sterile seaweed or a plastic polymer that gradually expand the cervix over a period of several hours.
